I thought I would write today about something that I have been doing some research on lately. It is about SEO and backlinking. As a website or blog owner, you really want to be found when people go searching for things you talk about on your blog. Article marketing has been the most popular form of gaining backlinks and visitors to one’s site for a few years now. But things are changing. With the recent Google slap, a lot of the old tricks aren’t working anymore.
In essence many webmasters were writing an article, spinning it several times and placing those spun articles in as many article directories as they could. Each article would be linked to their website with the same keyword and this is how the backlinks were being counted. But the more garbage was being put out there, the less people were using it to post to their own blogs or even click through. Google realized the duplicate content and cheesy changes were nothing more than adding crap to the directories and not providing real knowledge and information for those who want and need it. Hence the recent smack down.
People were willing to pay hundreds of dollars a month for spinning software, article submission services, or even ghostwriters to write the original content in a way that could be spun relatively easy. It is humanely impossible to blast out thousands of backlinks manually so you need these tools. For those who are trying to rank high with a certain competitive keyword, many times need those thousands of links to out rank the competition. It can take years to gain that many back links naturally and that would mean that there is no money to be earned having to wait.
Now on to the changes….Google wants unique content so no more adding spun articles to the directories. What do you do instead? Social media is becoming the thing to do now. I heard something the other day about there being 700 million people on Facebook and something like 325 million on Twitter. WOW! Could you imagine reaching that many people and the eyeballs that you would get on your stuff if each one of them passed along your article link to a social bookmark site or even a friend just once?
I don’t know about you but I find it a lot more fun to write one informative post and submit it to my 15 favorite social bookmark sites along with Facebook and Twitter and watch the visitors that come in from there. They pass on the link as well if they like it and more people can find it from them. Blog commenting is another popular way to get links. If you are making a routine of going around to related blogs for researching new topics, it is not hard to make a comment when you have something to add or enjoyed something they wrote. You can gain a back link for your relevant keyword by inserting some html coding into your comment with your keywords when it will look proper and not spammy. If the webmaster does not allow that, you merely get a back link without anchor text by including your website url in the submission part. Many webmasters are now using the CommentLuv plugin so when you enter in your blog url, the last post title you made pops up for others to see and they can click on it to visit your site if they like the topic.
Forum posting is another good way to gain backlinks naturally. I spend quite a bit of time in forums. By writing up a good signature with my top keywords included and linked to my site, I can get a backlink whenever I post. Now remember, you need to answer threads with relevant and informative comments and not just spammy one sentence answers just to get a backlink.
Some people say that these types of backlinks don’t rank as high as others like the ones from top rated article directory sites but I think with all of the new changes, we could be seeing a difference in this as well. I heard that Google will soon be counting things such as “likes” on your posts that have been placed on Facebook and if that is the case, more people should start spending time paying attention to what is put on these sites by fellow marketers and work at home folks.
There is always going to be changes in the way search engines qualify our links and our efforts. By doing things that are fun and natural such as posting on social bookmark sites, participating in forums, and commenting on other blogs, we can enjoy what we do, gain more knowledge and see our visitor count rise as Google places us higher in the search engine pages.
Remember, you could have the best content in the world out there but if no one knows where you are or who you are, how are they going to find you? Now go out there, learn all you can and meet new people while sharing all that you have to offer. Money will follow. If you are in need of instant money, there are many jobs you can find online or you may have to keep your offline job for awhile. This is not an overnight kind of endeavor. It can take a couple years to start earning a steady and reliable income that will pay your bills. But at least now you know there is a fun way to go about it!
